Top Your New Year’s Resolution with a Sprinkle of...Cherish?

Did you make any new year’s resolutions this year? Perhaps you want to lose weight, find a new partner, or travel more often.

But what about a more straightforward new year’s resolution—one that you can accomplish with minimal effort? Making a new year’s resolution to cherish the ordinary aspects of your life and bring an attitude of reverence to your day-to-day routine can completely transform your mindset.

Cherishing something means understanding its holiness and recognizing the sacredness in simple things. But you don’t have to be religious to make this your new year's resolution.

Here’s how you can learn to cherish each moment of your life, and see a massive shift in your attitude and well-being—without making tons of resolutions.

Our Basic Needs

Before you dig into a meal, be thankful for the fact that it’s on your table. As you fall asleep at night, reflect on how lucky you are to have a roof over your head.

When you go to get a glass of clean water from the sink, remember that water is life. The fact that we can turn on the tap and quench our thirst is practically a miracle. Think of all of the little things that you can be thankful for. Consider whether you genuinely cherish them as much as you could.

Our Bodies

Our bodies do so much for us daily, but most of the time, we run on autopilot. The human body is a miracle. Yet we rarely stop to think about everything that our bodies can do without us even thinking about it.

Each day, pause and take a deep breath, and acknowledge how amazing it is that merely breathing gives us life. Doing gentle yoga and meditation can help you develop a more positive relationship with your body and cherish it.

Interactions with Others

When you got on the bus in the morning, do you take a second to make eye contact with your driver and say hello? If you’re in line at the grocery store, do you pay attention to your conversation with the cashier who rings you up?

In those moments when you bump into someone you know on the street, do you make small talk and rush away? Or, do you appreciate the happy coincidence?

In your interactions with others, make an effort to cherish their presence and what they bring to your life, even if you only see them for a minute or two.

Close Relationships

How much time do you spend looking into your partner’s eyes? How often do you greet your close friends with a warm hug? When you spend time with someone who means a lot to you, sink into that moment, and fully appreciate it.

Hold your loved ones close and let them know just how much you care about them. Life is short. We can never spend enough time with the people who mean the most to us.

Morning Rituals

A morning ritual could be just the change that you need to start each day with gratitude. Perhaps you could enjoy the early hours on your front porch with your journal and a cup of coffee.

Maybe you could spend some time getting cozy in your living room and reading your favorite book. Alternatively, you could make it a point to enjoy a hearty breakfast with your partner rather than sleeping later and rushing out the door to work.

Do you ever feel like you’re letting precious moments pass by, and you wish you could practice cherishing each day instead?
