There is a season for everything in life—being single, either for a respite or for a lifetime, can bring unforeseen benefits and happiness.
Singleness can open the door to many possibilities. There is time to develop and enjoy freedom from external relationships that can be confining or controlling. And there can be time to seek out new friendships or relationships, while finding a balance that still affords an emphasis on your own individual self.
We all need time to ourselves to figure out who we really are. Being in a relationship can come with all sorts of challenges, and there are times in life when flying solo is actually beneficial.
Plus, when you’ve spent enough time being happy on your own, you won’t settle for anything less than a loving partner. Here’s why being single can actually be an asset.
1. Career First
When you’re single, you can really focus on your career. If you’re super passionate about your job, you can afford to make it your top priority for a while. That’s not to say that ambition and romance can never mix, but sometimes, it’s easier to make professional strides when you’re single.
2. Location Independence
If you have a partner, you always have to consider them when you’re deciding where you will live. Even if you’re both okay with long-distance, there’s a difference between being a couple hour’s drive away or on the other side of the country.
But when you’re single, you can put down roots wherever you like, and you’re free to move as you please.
3. Going Your Own Way
In a relationship? You’ve got to at least let your partner know what you’re doing before you make plans. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to ask permission for every little thing you do—but you do have to keep them in the know.
When you’re single, you can do your own thing without checking in with anyone. You have total freedom—take advantage of it!
4. Expanding Your Social Circle
It’s all too easy to limit your social circle when you’re dating someone. You already have a few friends of your own, they have their friends, and you’re not looking to meet any potential partners, so you’re tempted to stay in rather than go out.
But when you’re single, you’re keeping your options open. You’re more motivated to get out of your bubble and meet new people.
5. Becoming Self Sufficient
There’s no shame in needing a little help every once in a while. We all need a shoulder to lean on and a friend to call when times are tough. But when you’re single, it’s a great opportunity to learn how to rely on yourself. You need to handle your responsibilities on your own, which can be challenging. But at the same time, you’ll come out it knowing exactly what you’re capable of.
6. Finding Yourself
Yes, you can learn a great deal about yourself while you’re in a relationship. But part of the fun of being single is finding yourself. You’re just doing you, and you call the shots. If you’ve always been attached to someone, the idea of being on your own can feel uncomfortable. But in the end, you’ll be able to look back and say that it was worth it.
Time alone can strengthen you in your self-confidence, wisdom, and appreciation of yourself. Time alone can help you to more fully treasure your friends and family, and help you find, and focus, on that which you enjoy most in life.
